The 12th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry known as "1st Scotch Regiment" was Mustered In on August 1, 1861 and was engaged in the Battle of Shiloh, Siege of Corinth, and Battle of Atlanta, among other notable engagements. The unit was mustered out in July 1865. Its commanders included Colonel John McArthur, Colonel Augustus L Chetlain, and Lieutenant Colonel Henry Van Sellers.

Label affixed on inside cover: Richard B Paddock, 6th Regiment of Calvary, U. Was a United States Army. Officer, close friend and brother-in-law to John J. And one of the few American officers who died while on duty in China during the Boxer Rebellion.
