It was originally made as a double-D guard with a second guard covering the right side of the hand which was removed during the period. Oversized wood handles are riveted through the tang and carved E-HUMPHREYS with an X or K carved below.
The base of the blade is additionally stamped C. Humphreys of Company K (Abbays Battery) 1st Mississippi Light Artillery, enlisted May 7th 1862. The regiment saw action throughout the entire Vicksburg campaign and surrendered after the battle on July 4th 1863. Double-D guard knives are exceptionally rare and to find one of this size with history really makes it a choice addition to any Civil War collection.
